The Bishops – I’m Gonna Move

Ran across this video this week and got to thinking back about all of the great music that The Bishops gave to SG music.  They were and still are one of the best trios ever to come along and I couldn’t help but wonder if the group in this video from 1986 even had an inkling of the impact they would make in the SG community.  Enjoy!!!

Top 100: #89 This Is the Day (Perrys)

Release Year: 2003

Album Rank for Group: #4 of 4

Here’s a blurb: The Perrys’ first entry in the countdown is a strong and steady collection of songs, including one of their big showstoppers (“Calvary Answers for Me”) and a bunch of Kyla Rowland goodness.  You’ve accomplished something if you’ve sung along with “I Wish I Could’ve Been There,” but just listening to it is fun enough.

Knock my socks off: I Wish I Could’ve Been There, Calvary Answers for Me

Don’t skip that one: The Lord Knows What to Do, Out of Harm’s Way, The Blood of an Old Rugged Cross, Damascus Road

I could honestly do without: His Scars

Top 100: #90 Treasures (Mark Trammell Quartet)

Release Year: 2011

Album Rank for Group: #7 of 8

Here’s a blurb: Treasures is an outstanding tribute to the Cathedral Quartet, delivered by one of the classiest and best-sounding quartets in the business.

Knock my socks off: I Thirst

Don’t skip that one: Blood Washed Band, Echoes From the Burning Bush, Gentle Shepherd, Wedding Music, Boundless Love

I could honestly do without: Master Builder (only because it’s the sixth very similar version recorded)

Wait, there’s more!: Here’s a full review

Top 100: #91 When I Wake Up (To Sleep No More) (Inspirations)

Release Year: 1973

Album Rank for Group: #6 of 6

Here’s a blurb: Starting in the early 1970s, the Inspirations and Canaan Records formed one of gospel music’s most successful partnerships.  When I Wake Up is an outstanding early chapter in their history together.  The title track would become perhaps the most signature of the quartet’s signature songs, and the rest of the album is chock full of consistently good old-fashioned quartet music.

Knock my socks off: When I Wake Up (To Sleep No More)

Don’t skip that one: When I Got Saved, Revival Days, The First Look, When I Step Off on That Beautiful Shore

I could honestly do without: God’s Last Altar Call

Top 100: #92 Stand by Me Live (Ernie Haase & Signature Sound)

Release Year: 2004

Album Rank for Group:#1 of 1

Here’s a blurb: This live recording contains the best selections from Signature Sound’s earliest recordings.  It’s easy to see how the quartet quickly developed a significant following: the energetic renditions of traditional gospel music found here are hard to beat.  In this humble blogger’s opinion, this was Signature Sound at its best.

Knock my socks off: Gone, The Heavenly Parade

Don’t skip that one: Glory Glory Clear the Road, Stand by Me, Old Time Christian Way, Oh What a Savior

I could honestly do without: Going Home

Top 100: #93 Everything Good (Gaither Vocal Band)

Release Year: 2002

Album Rank for Group: #7 of 7

Here’s a blurb: The first of two studio albums with Russ Taff in the baritone slot, Everything Good contains a couple of absolutely stellar performances, but also some snoozers.  The top songs merit the album a top 100 ranking, but there’s not enough consistency to push it higher on the list.

Knock my socks off: It Is Finished, O Love That Will Not Let Me Go

Don’t skip that one: Alpha and Omega, I’m Gonna Sing

I could honestly do without: When He Talked About His Home, The Really Big News, He Came Through

Top 100: #94 Kings Gold IV (Kingsmen & Gold City)

Release Year: 1996

Album Rank for Group: #3 of 3

Here’s a blurb: The last of perhaps the greatest collaborative series in gospel music history, Jim Hamill leads his choir of quartet members in various southern gospel classics.

Knock my socks off: The Lighthouse

Don’t skip that one: Lead Me to That Rock, I Bowed on My Knees, You Sho Do Need Him Now

I could honestly do without: Farther Along
