Album Rank for Group: #6 of 15
Here’s a blurb: Standing in the Gap was the only major studio recording of new songs that Gold City recorded with David Hill in the lead position. They took full advantage of his talents, utilizing him to great effect on the now-classic “I’m Not Giving Up,” along with other strong numbers like “Be Not Afraid” and “All That I Am.” This album is typical Gold City of this era, with several hard-driving uptempo numbers mixed with a power ballad or two (“It’s Not in Vain” is a stellar example) and one with an inspirational lean (“All That I Am”). Take a powerful vocal lineup, match them with terrific songs like these, and you can’t help but produce an exciting listening experience.
Knock my socks off: I’m Not Giving Up, It’s Not in Vain, Be Not Afraid, Guilty of Loving Me
Don’t skip that one: Show Me the Cross, What a Great Homecoming Day, Surely
I could honestly do without: None…this one is well-balanced.

I have a deep regret concerning this album and that is that I waited too long to purchase the accompaniment track cassette for it. I have all the others and even a still sealed duplicate of the Pillars of Faith with the songbook, but didn’t get this one (intending to do it later when the order would be larger). I tried many years ago and Sharon said she hated to see it gone too because there were so many good songs on it (paraphrasing). Not too long ago I did manage to get some of the songs from someone who had had it and converted it, but didn’t have all of the songs. I would firstly want to buy the thing itself, but if someone didn’t want to sell the original, I would still love to have the tracks themselves.
“All That I Am” is a great song that would have also fit Parker had he still been in there. As much as I liked Parker, Hill did a great job on it and Parker’s absence wasn’t noticed or felt. “It’s Not In Vain” has ministered to me at times and I wish I could find that track (original of course). I was just thinking of “Show Me the Cross” yesterday during our pastor’s sermon. Those are my top three picks. Some of the others I don’t even remember.
Years ago someone on the Oaks board was asking about “I’m Not Giving Up”. They thought the Oaks did it. I clued them in and they said something to the effect that it sounded a lot like the Oaks nonetheless. I disagreed. 🙂 I love both groups, but even if one couldn’t tell Hill from Allen, Trammell from Golden or Riley from Sterban how anyone could think that Parrack and Bonsall sound alike is beyond me. 😀
This is my all-time favorite Gold City recording. This was what got me hooked on Southern Gospel and Gold City when I was a teenager. I wore out two cassettes before buying a cd, and then I had to purchase another because the cd player wouldn’t read it after a year of use! Thank goodness for mp3s!
I too missed the opportunity to purchase the full album soundtrack, and would love to get my hands on it someday if I ever could!!!
I also would love for the album to become a digital downlaod. It was a great gift to friends back when it was available. Such a great collection of songs. Many are great for ministry as well!
What makes it more sad, Matt, was that I saw it on their site a few times (at least), but waited too long to attempt to get it. I did I think mention them making the tracks available for download when they first started offering them, but nothing has ever come from it that I saw.
Hey Matt, I might be able to help. What’s a good way to reach you?
Hi, I saw your comment about maybe being able to help Matt with the Standing in the Gap sound track. Would you be able to help me with the track A Strong Hand? Thanks.
I am looking for Great Homecoming Day sound track, can anyone help?
Well, finally! =)
I’ve searched the internet for the accompaniment track for “All that I Am” and cannot find it. Does anyone know where I can find it?
Thanks,
Cindy

I wish I knew, Cindy! Maybe some reader will chime in!
I thought I had seen a CD accompaniment track of this entire album, but now I’m second-guessing myself. I bought the cassette track of all the songs, but unfortunately it has broken. I was, however, fortunate to have recorded several of the songs onto a cassette that I used with a group I was a part of in the early 2000s. I sang “All That I Am” this morning–one of my favorites. If anyone knows how to get a CD track of the album, I’d be interested.
