I’m sure most all of us would agree that one of the reasons we love southern gospel music is because of the sound Biblical basis of the lyrics. Not only are southern gospel songs rooted in the Word of God, but many songs treat the Word itself as a lyrical subject. The Bible is the foundation for all that Christians believe, so it’s certainly a worthy topic for a song. Here is a playlist of some of my favorite songs of the Word.

Actually, a couple CCM songs came to mind. First, Sara Groves’ “The Word”:

Second, a Getty song called “Every Promise of Your Word”:

And of course, the Rich Mullins classic “Creed”:

I believe what I believe
It’s what makes me what I am
I did not make it, no it is making me
It is the very truth of God
And not the invention of any man
I thought of a few :
Doing It By The Book -The Whites
The Old Love letter – McKameys
My Love Letters To You -Rambos
Family Bible – George Jones
Let Your Fingers Do The Walking Through The Pages Of God’s Word -can’t remember who did it

Seems like I remember seeing a video of Rusty Goodman singing “Let Your Fingers Do the Walking,” with Tim Riley.
Black & White – Singing Americans. It’s not dripping with depth, but it’s snappy and it’s an 80s classic
.
Another that gets stuck in my head is off of the first Kirk Talley solo project, entitled, “The Word Says”.
“The Price of a Book” by the Rochesters is a powerful song that asks us the question… “Why can’t we stand up for what they died for? Their every dream we take for granted every day…”
Also, Ethan Whisnant has one on he and Austin’s new cd titled, “The Book” that says in the chorus… “Every phrase leads me straight to Jesus, Lord, I thank you for the Book…”
Both of these are great songs! : )
