The Playlist #6: Prayer

One of the greatest things about being a child of God is the opportunity to boldly approach the throne of grace for our every need.  Every Christian needs prayer, and I’m sure most Christians love to hear songs about prayer.  Here’s an 80-minute playlist of some of my favorite songs on this subject.

For me, no writers capture the power of prayer in song like Kyla Rowland and Rodney Griffin.  They each have several songs represented below.

What did I leave out that you would include?  Which of these songs speak strongly to you?

  1. Just Pray, Greater Vision, Far Beyond This Place
  2. Prayer Is a Wonderful Gift From God, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, School of Bluegrass
  3. Pray, Gold City, Preparing the Way
  4. It Pays to Pray, Greater Vision, Not Alone
  5. Pray for Me, Kingdom Heirs, Give Me The Mountain
  6. Just a Little Talk With Jesus, Kingdom Heirs, Feelin’ at Home
  7. We Still Have to Pray, Greater Vision, The Only Way
  8. I Can Pray, Dove Brothers, Never the Same
  9. I’ll Talk to the Father, Nelons, Thanks
  10. Within the Reach of a Prayer, Collingsworth Family, The Answer
  11. Pray, Cathedrals, Master Builder
  12. Prior to a Prayer, Perrys, Almost Morning
  13. God Still Answers Prayer, Karen Peck & New River, Restoration
  14. Mention My Name, Hoppers, Mention My Name
  15. The Devil Can’t Harm a Prayin’ Man, Blackwood Brothers, Sweet Songs About Heaven
  16. I Need the Prayers of Those I Love, Greater Vision, Songs of the 1900s
  17. Somebody Touched the Lord, Perfect Heart, It Comes From the Heart
  18. Somebody’s Prayin’, Ricky Skaggs, A Billy Graham Music Homecoming, Volume One
  19. Out of Harm’s Way, Perrys, This Is the Day

  1. ‘A Wall Of Prayer’ is another that I would include

    1. And it’s another Kyla tune, right?

“I’ll Pray For You”, The Whisnants”, Life Worth Living
“A Greater Yes”, The Whisnants”, New Day Dawning
“Wall Of Prayer”, The McKameys, (Album?)
“I Can Still Pray Through”, Barry Rowland & Deliverance, Make Mine The Real Thing

    1. Good suggestions…I particularly like “A Greater Yes”.

      1. Ditto on “A Greater Yes.”

‘Wall of Prayer’ is in the ‘Always’ album by the McKameys and yes, Mrs. Kyla wrote it.

One of my favorites is “Prayer” from the Carolina Boys (Kingsmen) CD “Good News”. If I remember correctly, it was written by Gerald Crabb. Ray Reese sings the second verse, and I think it is one of his best performances ever.

I don’t know who may have recorded it, but from the beloved Church Hymnal, “I Know He Heard My Prayer” surely encourages and blesses me.

    1. It was one of my last cuts from the list. I love the song, of course, but I cut it because it’s more of a salvation song than a song about prayer itself. The best version is Greater Vision’s on Hymns of the Ages. You heard them sing that version a while back in person.

I well remember that evening! Thanks for the reminder. Thank God that salvation is just a prayer away!

We just had a sermon about prayer Sunday. I used a few songs from here for my pre-service music which I had made some months ago. I have the original cut of “Somebody’s Prayin'” which is a bit better I think than the live version you mentioned (as I recall anyhow). It IS a great tune that a friend of mine introduced me to when it first came out. I also love the alternate chord at the end. In fact, I sang that arrangement as a solo with the original track a couple of times.

  2. I’d add “Praying Man” and maybe “I Will Be Praying” by Brian Free & Assurance. Not SG-style songs, I know, but still fun, especially the first one. There’s also a song called “I Can Pray” that I kind of like. It’s not the same one that the Dove Brothers did. I think the Woodsmen Quartet sang it.

I love the song, “It’s Me Again Lord”. I feel like this could be my theme song!
