Album Of The Week – Week 4

Singing News
30th Anniversary Collection

The album I recommend for your collection this week can be rather elusive when you try to get your hands on it.  If you purchase it, then you have gotten the best songs from 1970-1999 according to Jerry Kirksey of the Singing News.

Daywind released this compilation CD to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Singing News National Chart for Southern Gospel Music.  This ratings chart was the first of it’s kind for Southern Gospel music.

The song list for the project is as follows:

1970 – The Oak Ridge Boys – Jesus Is Coming Soon
1971 – Wendy Bagwell & The Sunlighters – Here Come The Rattlesnakes
1972 - The Rambos – Build My Mansion
1973 – The Oak Ridge Boys – King Jesus
1974 – Inspirations – When I Wake Up To Sleep No More
1975 – Thrasher Brothers – One Day At A Time
1976 – Blackwood Brothers – Learning To Lean
1977 – Inspirations – A Rose Among The Thorns
1978 – The Imperials – Sail On
1979 – Teddy Huffam & The Gems – Gone
1980 – Squire Parsons – Sweet Beulah Land
1981 – The Hemphills – He’s Still Working On Me
1982 – Heaven Bound – Canaanland Is Just In Sight
1983 – The Cathedrals – Step Into The Water
1984 – Gold City – I Think I’ll Read It Again
1985 – Gold City – John Saw
1986 – The Kingsmen – Called Out

“I Have Been Changed” has been singled by Legacy Five

You may ask why the excitement over a song being singled?!?!?

This track from Legacy Five’s latest release (excluding their Friday Night Favorites table project, of course) is by far the strongest song I have heard in a long time. I can still remember the first time that I heard the song.  I had downloaded the album from iTunes and put it straight onto my iPod.  I wear my iPod while doing my yardwork, so I waited until that afternoon to listen to the album while mowing my lawn.

The first few tunes from the project were good, not great to me, but good.  Then Glen Dustin took off on this song and I had to stop working.  It’s not often that I have a Holy Ghost spell outside of a church, but this song really stirred something inside of me.  In fact, I still feel the same way everytime I listen to this song all of these months later.

I was in shock when I heard that Strike Up The Band was the first release from the recording.  I thought it was one of the weaker songs and I doubted that “I Have Been Changed” would even be released.  Imagine my surprise yesterday while listening to an online radio broadcast from www.joyfm.org when I heard the brief song introduction by Roger Bennett and then Glen taking the lead on this song.

I immediately contacted Legacy Five’s office to confirm that this song had been singled.  Here is the reply I received:

Adam,

I know that song will be our next single release — so if you heard it — it must have happened!  I know it was to happen soon!

It’s a great song — to be sure!

Blessings,

Keep your ears open the next time you are listening to Southern Gospel radio.  If you’ve never heard this song, you’d better buckle up when you hear it for the first time.

Roy Webb says good-bye to Signature Sound

In a public announcement, Ernie Haase has broke the news that Roy Webb is no longer the pianist Ernie Haase & Signature Sound quartet.  I suppose that this has something to do with Roy missing the live video taping, which Daniel Mount reported on earlier in the month. (Click HERE for the announcement from Ernie)

To me, Roy was the highlight of the group, due to the comedic sidekick role that he had.  I’m sure that Ernie will have an abundance of keyboard talent to choose Roy’s replacement from, but it’ll take someone special to replace Roy’s stage presence.

Anthony Facello’s new group, Crossroad

Anthony Facello

Southern Gospel Reporter is reporting that Anthony will debut his new group, Crossroad, in the coming weeks.  Anthony was the original tenor for Mercy’s Mark, as well as alumni of The Journeymen, The Down East Boys, and Heaven Bound.  Anthony is an excellent tenor, so I assume that he has found vocalists that compliment his talent.  I suppose we’ll have to wait and see (…or hear).

While not my favorite group, this CD IS one of my favorites.  You need this project in your collection.

Not a bad deal at all……

ebay gem – 5/17/07

Here is a lot of Southern Gospel records that could possibly be a treasure or a waste of money. I wish people would take the time to list what they are selling, but sometimes they don’t. If the price for this doesn’t go much higher, then you could wind up getting a very good deal on an auction like this.
